Lessons in partnership

Barry Callebaut funded the construction of a secondary school in Akoupé, located north of Abidjan in the Adzopé cocoa growing region in Ivory Coast. The school was inaugurated in November 2009.

School enrollment has grown from 230 pupils in the 2009/10 school year to more than 400 today.

The school supervisory committee supports plans to gradually expand the school by building additional classrooms to accommodate more students.

Barry Callebaut is working with partners including the World Cocoa Foundation ECHOES Alliance and the Jacobs Foundation to further developing the facility to serve as a community learning center. The expanded curriculum includes adult literacy, farmer field school training and vocational programs for out-of-school youth.
