“We emphasize education and promote the importance of schooling for children of cocoa farmers.” Jean-Ponce Assi, Secretary General, Barry Callebaut SACO
Working to improve access to education
Education is a key area of focus for community development. Since QPP was launched in 2005, Barry Callebaut has emphasized the importance of schooling for children of cocoa farmers.
In Côte d'Ivoire to date and together with our partners, we have built 36 classrooms at 10 rural primary schools, as well as supporting infrastructure including latrines, canteens, and teacher housing, enabling 1,800 children to attend school. We have also built a secondary school, Akoupé College, which currently comprises 16 classrooms for an enrolled student body of 1,140, and supporting infrastructure including science labs, a library, a canteen, latrines and an infirmary. In addition, each year Barry Callebaut distributes school kits and sponsors community events to recognize scholastic achievement.
Working with local NGO partners, we also organize training activities to sensitize farmers and coop representatives about the issue of child labor.
