Working with cooperatives
Successful cocoa farmer cooperatives are democratic and transparent. They provide useful and needed services to their farmer members.
Strengthening the farmer organizations
Barry Callebaut works with cooperatives and provides training and financial support to enable the farmer organizations to better meet the needs of their members.
Strong cooperatives practice good governance, are economically sound and well-managed, and recognize their responsibilities to serve their farmer members.
Emphasis is also placed on traceability and on improving cocoa quality through training and monitoring, and on child labor sensitization.
To participate in our sustainable cocoa programs, cooperatives must agree to undergo an independent audit. Participating coops must agree to and sign a charter underscoring their commitment to the program. Barry Callebaut commissions regular independent audits of participating cooperatives to ensure that coops comply with our standards for responsible business practices.
